Turning away from the Ignorant
Allah the Highest said: “TAKE FROM THEIR EXCESS MONEY, AND UPHOLD GOOD TRADITIONS, AND TURN YOUR BACK TO THE IGNORANT”. (S: 7 A: 199)
In this Ayah is a command to Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him and the Muslims in general to turn their backs to the ignorant. So what is it to turn your back to the ignorant?
It is to ignore them and not to enter into an argument or a quarrel with them, physical or verbal. The Muslim should be above that, should leave the ignorant and turn his back to him and go. This protects the dignity of the Muslim and shows his strength for Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “The strong is not the person who can overpower others physically, but the strong is the one who can control himself when angry”. (M:Ber;107 & B:Adab;102)
The prophets and messengers prayer and peace upon them all were not argumentative, particularly with the ignorant. What they said was decisive. Allah the Highest said about His prophet Dawood (David) peace be upon him: “WE STRENGTHENED HIS KINGDOM, AND WE GAVE HIM WISDOM AND THE DECISIVE WORDS”. (S:38 A:20)
When the king of Egypt argued with Ibrahim, the father of the prophets prayer and peace upon him, Ibrahim did not argue but close the argument with a decisive statement as we were told in Baqarah: “DID YOU NOT SEE HE WHO HAD A DISPUTE WITH IBRAHIM CONCERNING HIS LORD, AS IBRAHIM SAID: “MY LORD IS HE WHO GIVES LIFE AND DEATH”. HE SAID: “I GIVE LIFE AND DEATH”. IBRAHIM SAID: “BUT ALLAH BRINGS THE SUN FROM THE EAST, YOU BRING IT FROM THE WEST”. THE DISBELIEVERS WAS CONFOUNDED, AND ALLAH DOES NOT GUIDE THE UNJUST EVIL DOERS”. (S:2 A:258)
And of turning our backs to the ignorant not to sit down with them while they are insulting Allah the Highest, his books and messengers and prophets. Allah the Highest said: “WE SENT DOWN UPON YOU IN THE BOOK THAT IF YOU HEAR ALLAH’S AYAHS DISBELIEVED IN AND MOCKED, DO NOT SIT DOWN WITH THEM UNTIL THEY TALK ABOUT SOMETHING DIFFERENT, OTHERWISE YOU WILL BE LIKE THEM. ALLAH WILL GATHER THE HYPOCRITES AND THE DISBELIEVERS ALL TOGETHER IN THE HELL-FIRE”. (S:4 A:140)
This is what all the prophets and messengers prayer and peace upon them all did with the ignorant, and this is what the believers should do. Turning our backs to them shows them to be insignificant and not important, not attracting attention to them, and in the mean time keeping the believer dignified and the faith honoured.
Allah’s prayer and peace be upon Mohamed and upon his family and companions.

The Good We Keep
Allah the Highest said: “MONEY AND CHILDREN ARE THE PLEASURES OF THE LOWER LIFE, BUT THE GOOD DEEDS WE KEEP ARE BETTER IN REWARDING AND BETTER HOPE”. (S: 18 A: 46)
And Allah the Highest said: “ALLAH INCREASES THE GUIDANCE OF THOSE RIGHTLY GUIDED, AND THE GOOD DEEDS THAT REMAINS ARE BETTER WITH YOUR LORD IN REWARDING AND BETTER RECOMPENSE”. (S: 19 A: 76)
The good deeds that remain are the good deeds which are recorded in our book of deeds, which remain for us in the Hereafter. Every thing a person does will perish eventually even if they remain for thousands of years after he is gone. Also it does not do who does it any good except if it is a good deed.
Every thing we do of eating, drinking, dressing, or enjoying ourselves does not remain, except the good deed that is done for the sake of Allah the Highest or the what we did to displease Allah the Highest, they do not perish when a person perishes. They will remain in the person’s book of deeds to be taken into account when the person means his creator.
All the deeds we do in this life, we will see its recompense and feed back in this life, except what was to please Allah the Highest or displease Him. The person will see their full recompense in the Hereafter when he meets his Lord.
Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “Three things follow the dead (to his grave) two return and the third remains with him. His family and property return and his deeds stay”. (M: Zohd; 5)
Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him also said: “The slave of Allah says: My money, my money. All he has from his money are three things; what he ate and perished, or what he wore and ruined or what he gave and kept. All else, he will go and leave behind”. (M: Zohd; 4)
Whatever the son of Adam does of evil deeds, he will hope not to see on the Day of Resurrection, as Allah the Highest said: “THE DAY WHEN EVERY SOUL WILL FIND WHATEVER GOOD IT HAS DONE PRESENT, AND WISHES IT IS A LONG DISTANCE FROM WHATEVER EVIL IT HAS DONE. ALLAH WARNS YOU OF HIMSELF, AND ALLAH IS KIND TO THE SLAVES”. (S: 3 A: 30)
As for the good deeds, they remain, increase and multiply with Allah the Highest, even if we forget about them, they remain for us, giving us hope in Allah’s Mercy, without which no one can gain entry to Paradise.
We ask Allah to be of those whom Allah embraces with His Mercy and admits to His Paradise. Amen.

Hates Injustice
Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him hated injustice and the unjust. He avoided being unjust at any time, this is because of what he knew about Allah’s hate of injustice.
Allah’s messenger’s companion, Anas Ibn Malek reported: “The prices went up during the life of Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him. People said to him: “Fix prices for us Allah’s messenger”. He said: “Allah is the one who makes the prices and He is the One who withhold and the One, who gives, and I hope to meet my Lord and no one has any claim that I have been unjust to him, neither in blood or money”. (T:Beyo;73 & D:Beyo;49 & Ma:Tegarate;27 & Da:Beyo;13 & A:2;337)
Many of us will think that for the state authorities to fix the prices of some essential items without compensating for any losses is a common practice and is not unjust to any one. However, Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him who knew Allah the Highest best and is the most pious did not like to fix a price for any thing.
It may be that the price would be good for the merchant and unfair for the buyer, and he would be unjust to the buyer. Or it may be that the price would be cheap for the buyer and unfair for the merchant, and he would be unjust to the merchant. In either case some one will have a claim against him on thee Day of Resurrection.
This shows us how much was Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him keen to avoid being unjust to any one, in any way or form. Such is the character of Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him, whom Allah the Highest made to be thee example for us to follow.
May Allah’s prayer and peace be upon our prophet and messenger Mohamed and upon his family and companions.

Did Not Spy on His Wives
Many of us experienced feelings of jealousy and suspicion towards one’s wife or husband which might lead us to spy on her or him.
A man may go back home earlier than usual or if on a trip might return earlier than expected and unannounced, might even pretend to be travelling. All in order to catch the betraying party red handed.
Some husbands or wives might listen in on their spouse telephone conversations, or look into their mobile phones to see who called them and whom they called, at what time and for how long. They also look into the messages to see if any of them is affectionate or even familiar in tone.
Wives look into their husband’s cloths for hair, lipstick marks, any stains or strange perfumes.
All this might not be evidence of innocence to the suspicious spouse. They might feel that it is just a matter of time to catch them.
This has never been the character of Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him, to the contrary, when he returned from a journey, he waited for few hours before going home, so that his wife can be ready for him. At that time there was no telephones or mobiles phones. The main thing is that he did not go home unannounced.
Jabir Ibn Abd Allah Allah’s messenger’s companions said: “We were with Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him travelling on an Expedition, When we reached Medina and we were going to our homes, Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “Wait for going in until dark, so that the woman who did not comb her hair combs it and the one who has been left for a while shaves”. (B: Nekah; 10 & M: Redaa; 56)
This is the Example of Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him. He would wait after his wives know of his return to Medina if he was travelling to give them time to tide themselves up, and not surprise them with his return.
One might say that they were Allah’s messenger’s wives, no like any other woman. I say that if a man chooses his wife well, and treats her well, he would see nothing but every thing good from her.
May Allah’s Prayer and Peace be upon our prophet and messenger Mohamed and upon his family and his companions.

Let us look at ourselves first
Of the deeds which might come under the name of hypocrisy, and many of us unknowingly do is for a person who is committing a big sin to be very critical or angered by minor sins of others.
May be that most of do not do this? Let us look at ourselves and those around us. How many of us do not pray the prescribed Salah and fast in Ramadan and criticize any one who does not fast even if has a legitimate excuse, knowing that the prescribed Salah comes before fasting in the order of obligations, for Salah is the first we have to account for on the Day of Resurrection.
One might cheat another out of his money or even take orphan’s money, in the mean time he does not a Salah, Fard or Sunah.
I will mention two historical incidents in which this behavior is shown:
The Indian Mutiny:
After the occupation of India by Britain, Britain started recruiting Indian soldiers into her army, and they were mostly Hindu and Muslims. Regiments of these soldiers were formed as part of the British army occupying their own country. A mutiny took place among the Indian soldiers, Hindu and Muslims against the British army and the British officers. This was because of a rumor spreading among the Indian soldiers that the army was giving them cow’s fat and pig’s fat to grease their rifles with. Cows are sacred for the Hindu and eating big if forbidden for the Muslims.
The soldiers were angered because of the cow and pig fate, yet they were themselves helping the occupying army, suppressing and humiliating their own people, and taking the wealth of their country.
King Edward VIII:
He became the king of Britain in the thirties of the twentieth century, after being a crown prince. He had an affair with a married American woman called Mrs. Simpson. This affair was public and well known. This affair continued after he became king.
Mrs. Simpson eventually had a divorce from her husband, and the king wanted to marry her, and this was the problem. The Church of England did not approve of divorce, and the British government did not agree. The Church and the Government did not move or voice an opinion against the king’s sinful relationship, but did when the king wanted to marry.
The King decided to abdicate to marry the woman he loves, and so he did and lived with her in exile in France until he died.
Allah this shows us how many of us would turn a blind eye on great sins; in the mean time condemn and mount an opposition to minor sins particularly if others commit them. This shows lack of principles and malady of one’s soul.
We should be caution about criticizing and condemning others before looking at ourselves. It is possible that our errors are bigger and our sins are greater.

The End Does Not Justify the Means
Machiavelli wrote a book titles “the Prince” in the form of a story, the jest of it is that the End Justifies the Means. This means that if man is striving to a great goal, there is no harm in trying every means even illegal or inhuman. This principle might take different forms such as that the welfare of the group takes precedent over the welfare of the individual. This might justify impeding on the individual’s right, and making the welfare of the individual secondary to that of the group.
These thoughts began to invade the Muslims thoughts and there are even Fatwas to that effect. Some might not see any harm in killing Muslims or civilians in general in the course of fighting the enemy. Considering that killing such innocent civilians is an unavoidable evil in the course of fighting the enemy.
Let us see if these thoughts are supported or refuted by Allah’s Book and His messenger’s Sunah, for both are the only basis for the Muslims Principles and Law.
Allah the Highest lied down a very important principle in Islam saying “HE WHO KILLS A SOUL NOT FOR ANOTHER SOUL OR GREAT MISCHEIF ON EARTH, HE IS LIKE KILLING ALL PEOPLE AND HE WHO GIVES IT LIFE IS LIKE GIVING LIFE TO ALL PEOPLE”. (S: 5 A: 32)
The principle in this Aiah is clear, and all embracing, and absolute applying to Muslims and non Muslims. However, Allah the Highest told us also that the soul of the Muslim is Sacred, “IT IS NOT FOR A BELIEVER TO KILL a BELIEVER EXCEPT BY ERROR (ACCIDENT). (S: 4 A: 92)
Accidental; means totally non-intentional even if due to neglect. Meaning that one did not intend to kill the other. However, to do something which one knows will lead to killing of a Muslim or Muslims and to carry on is Intentional Killing. For he who kills a believer intentionally, Allah the Highest promised the following “HE WHO KILLS A BELIEVER INTENTIONALLY, HIS RECOMPENSE IS THE HELL FIRE WHERE HE WILL ABIDE FOREVER, AND ALLAH’S WROTH UPON HIM, AND HE CURSED AND PREPARED A GREAT PUNISHMENT FOR HIM”. (S: 4 A: 93)
All these Aiahs of the Quran are clear as to the prohibition of killing in general and the intentional killing of a believer in particular. There are no exemptions to such prohibitions. As with the food when Allah the Highest made being compelled to eat or drink prohibited foods and drinks allowed when compelled as to save one’s life. Allah the Highest said : “HE HAS FORBIDDEN YOU (EATING) THE DEAD, THE BLOOD AND PIG’S FLESH AND WHAT HAD OTHER THAN THE NAME OF ALLAL MENTIONED ON, BUT HE WHO IS COMPELLED, NOT TRANSGRESSING OR UNJUSTLY THERE IS NO SIN UPON HIM, FOR ALLAH IS MOST FORGIVING AND COMPASSIONATE” (S:2 A:173)
When the Muslim armies went out fighting, Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him used to command them not to kill children, women or old people. Also not to kill farmers or monks if they do not fight the Muslims, not to destroy churches or Jewish temples, homes or trees.
Allah’s messenger did not kill any one who testifies that there is not God other than Allah and Mohamed is His messenger even if he is a hypocrite. Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him did not kill Abd Allah Ibn Obi Ibn Salol who was the head of the hypocrites. He turned back with nearly 300 men out of a thousand whom going out of Medina to fight the disbelievers who came to fight them from Makah in a three thousand strong army.
Even when Abd Allah Ibn Obi’s son asked Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him to let him kill his own father, Allah’s messenger told him that he does not kill any one who says the Shahada.
When the Muslim army seizes Jerusalem during the time of Omar Ibn El Khatab, the leaders of the army offered its people total safety and security for their homes, money, churches and temples if they let them in without fight. The leaders of Jerusalem refused to take such promise except from Omar Ibn El-Khatab himself. The Muslims sent to Omar who traveled to Jerusalem with a servant sharing one Camel which they rode in turns.
Such was the importance of not shedding the blood of the Muslims and non Muslims, and such was the sanctity of people and place of worship.

THE GODLY MOTIVES
Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: “He who loves a person, loving him only for the sake of Allah, of hating him for the sake of Allah. And gives for the sake of Allah and withholds for the sake of Allah; his Faith is complete”
Giving and withholding, loving and hating, all represent all kinds of giving, materially and emotionally which a person can give or withhold from others. This also includes what a person can give others in the way of effort, care, and thought for others.
For a believer to do all this for the sake of Allah the Highest is evidence that this person’s faith is complete.
How would all this be for Allah?
Should one do this for knowing that Allah likes him to do that, or to obey Allah’s command, and then it is for the sake of Allah. If a person loves another because of his faith and piety, then this is love for the sake of Allah.
This love might be followed by giving of money and effort, then this giving is for the sake of Allah the Highest, or withholding it will be withholding for the sake of Allah the Highest.
Therefore, whoever gives or withholds money or effort for the sake of pleasing Allah the Highest, he has given for the sake of Allah and withheld for the sake of Allah.
In all these situations, the person’s motives and reasons are Godly.
If the believer’s feelings are moved for Godly reasons, and his deeds motivated by Godly motives, then whatever the person does or feels have Godly motives, and this is the complete faith as Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said.
Prayer and peace be upon our prophet and messenger Mohamed and upon his family and companions.

Contentment
(Alqanaa (القناعه
I mean the believer’s contentment with what Allah the Highest has given him of the provisions and world material.
It does mean that one should not work hard in this life, not just worship but all the work which makes life on Earth. Allah the Highest said “AND TELL THEM TO WORK, FOR ALLAH WILL SEE YOUR WORK AND SO WILL HIS MESSENGR AND THE BELIEVERS”. (S: 9 A: 105)
What is meant here is the work in this life on Earth in order to the Earth and those who live on it to thrive and for the Muslim to provide for his family and others. Also the acts of worship in the meaning of the word “Work”.
As long as a person does an honorable work, he will increase in status and value before Allah the Highest. This is because Allah the Highest appointed man to be His viceroy on earth. As such, one should look after it and every thing living on Earth. Allah the Highest said: “IT IS HIM WHO MADE YOU VICEROYS ON EARTH” (S: 35 A: 39)
“AND AS YOUR LORD SAID TO THE ANGELS: I AM PUTTING A VICEROY ON EARTH” (S: 2 A: 30)
The viceroy should look after what his Lord made him in charge of. To live on earth and make life good and prosperous involves all types of work from the most menial to the presidents and kings. No work is of no value for we depend on each other to make life good. The Professor needs and cleaner and rubbish collector, secretary, builder etc. Therefore we depend on each other to make life on Earth.
Each worker is important in what he or she does. However, Allah the Highest divided our share of what is on earth in certain way. It may be that some have more health and the other more money or intelligence, however each is provided for. Contentment in to be satisfied and pleased with what Allah the Highest provided for you. This however does not mean that one should not strive for something better and work for it.
Whoever is contented pleased with what Allah the Highest provided for him in this life, Allah will make his life and family blessed. He will not go to bed feeling that he is less than others, or if he had job he missed, he will be better of. Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said:”Being rich and not needing does not come from having plenty, but it comes from one’s soul being rich and not needing”. Let us remember always that our wealth does not increase our status before Allah only though piety and righteousness. It is also interesting that the word for rich literally means not in need.
Al Bukhari narrated the following Hadith. “A man passed before Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him. He asked a man sitting with him: What do you think of him? He said: A man of the nobles, if he asks us to marry one of our women, he will marry and if he intercedes his intercession will be accepted. Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him kept quite until another man passed, he asked: What do you think of this man? The man said: Allah’s messenger, this is one of the poor Muslims, if he asks to marry one of our women will not agree and if he intercedes his intercession will not be accepted, and if he speaks no one will take notice. Allah’s messenger prayer and peace upon him said: This is worth more than the many as the earth full of the other” (Bukhari)
This Hadith reminds us that our value and particularly before Allah the Highest does not increase or decrease because of our wealth.

Can We Disobey Allah Without His Bounties?
Allah the Highest created the Heavens and the Earth, and put Adam and His descendants on Earth, giving us all provisions we need.
Allah the Highest provided us with what we need in our bodies to live, work and multiply, and with the means of life on earth of food, water, air and material.
Also Allah the Highest sent us the guidance to live according to His Way, which we choose to obey or disobey.
Whether we obey or disobey Allay the Highest, we can not do without the bounties He bestowed upon us, in ourselves like health and senses and in our provisions, money, food etc.
One can not steal without health, eyesight, hearing and other thing. An Adulterer can not commit adultery without health and wealth and senses. So on is the case in all kinds of disobedience.
There is no way of knowing the extend of Allah’s bounties upon us, for the more we know, the more we know of Allah’s bounties. Allah the Highest said: “AND IF YOU TRY TO COUNT ALLAH’S BOUNTIES, YOU WILL NEVER COUNT THEM, INDEED ALLAH IS MOST FORGIVING AND MOST COMPASSIONATE”. (S: 16 A: 18)
To us, Allah’s bounties can be one of two things:
- Bounties he uses to obey Allah and please Him.
- Bounties which will tempt him to do wrong and evil, disobeying Allah the Highest. Such person, the more of Allah’s bounties he will have, the more able he will be to disobey Allah and to do wrong. For this person, giving us more, is giving us leeway to do more wrong.
Let us look at ourselves to see if Allah’s bounties upon us increased our obedience or disobedience of Allah. If it increases our obedience, let us be thankful. If it increases or disobedience, let us try to put ourselves right before we become of those about whom Allah the Highest said:
- ALLAH MOCKS THEM, AND GIVES THEM LEEWAY IN THEIR WICKEDNESS TO KEEP WONDERING BLINDLY. (S:2 A:15)
- “AND GIVE THEM LEEWAY; MY PLAN (FOR THEM) IS FIRM INDEED”. (S:7 A:183)
- “THOSE WHO DENY OUR AYAHS, WE WILL LEADING THEM FROM WHERE THEY DO NOT KNOW”. (S:7 A:182)
Those, Allah the Highest left them and let them disobey, not out of pleasure with them, but to the contrary out of Displeasure and Anger.
We ask Allah the Highest for His Protection from His Displeasure and Anger. Amen.

The Bounty and the Bountiful
Allah the Highest has been Bountiful to my family and we were able after paying the installments to have a new chalet by the Red Sea coast, for our holidays and weekends. After few tribes for preparations, delivering furniture and equipments, we went there for our first weekend in the chalet, which was enjoyable, thanks to Allah. There were a good number of the new owners of the chalets, who started to use theirs like us, although the holiday village amenities are not complete yet.
On Friday I went to for the Friday prayer in the temporary wooden mosque built until a mosque of brick and mortar is built. I could not help noticing that, the majority of the worshippers were of the workmen in the building and interior decoration trades working still in the village. Meanwhile, there were only few of the chalet owners present in the village on that day. Many of them, I saw on my way back from the mosque, were enjoying themselves in the chalets or by the sea.
This got me thinking.
Those given more worldly bounties; were less thankful to Allah the Bountiful, while those who had less worldly bounties were more thankful. Indeed, Allah the Highest said: “AND A FEW OF MY SLAVES ARE THANKFUL” (S: 34 A: 13)
As if, Allah’s bounty came between the slave and his Lord, obstructing his way to his Lord.
The bounties are more and the thanks are less.
Do not let Allah’s bounties upon you obstruct you way to Him.
